Basketball (Grade 4)

Print Test (Only the test content will print)

Basketball

Basketball is a traditional ball game which may be played either inside or out. However, it's best when played inside when the weather makes it much harder to play sports outdoors.

Overview of the Game
To play basketball, two baskets suspended on wire rings are placed at the opposite ends of a gym. The players strive to knock or pass the ball among the members of their team. Then they throw it so that it will fall into the basket. Players are not allowed to run with the ball as they can in rugby or football.

Equipment
The ball used is round, but in other ways resembles the ball used in football. It is made in four sections of grained English leather and is inflated by means of a rubber bladder. The official ball weighs about 18 ounces and is 31 inches in circumference. The players use rubber-soled shoes with peculiar knobs, ridges, or depressions to prevent slipping. The traditional uniform is simply a gym shirt, running shorts, and socks which are rolled down just below the knees.

Playing the Game
Any level area may be used for basketball. Most courts are 40 by 60 feet. The baskets used for goals are 18 inches in diameter and are usually placed 10 feet above the ground. The taller the basketball player, the easier it may be to make a basket. Five players are all you need to make up a team. The halves are usually twenty minutes, with a ten-minute intermission for rest.

You are not allowed to kick or carry the ball. Instead the ball must be dribbled, which is a consistent bouncing the ball on the ground using one hand. The ball moves around the court through dribbling and passing among players. A player must stop movement in order to shoot the ball or pass the ball. Otherwise, the player will earn a traveling violation. Violating a rule earns you a foul and gives the opponents a free throw. This is a shot at the basket made from fifteen feet away.

Scoring
A basket or goal made in play counts two points and a goal from a foul one point. The floor of the basketball court also contains a special arc around the basket and any goal made from outside that arc earns three points. At the end of the game, the team with the most points is declared the winner.
