Stairs Stairs may not look like a machine. They don't have motors or moving parts. But, stairs can be used to do work by moving objects up and down them. A set of stairs is an example of an inclined plane, one of the six simple machines.

The simplest inclined plane is a ramp. It is a smooth, tilted surface. If you need to move a heavy box from the ground to a higher position, using a ramp can help. Instead of lifting the box straight up, you can push it up the ramp. The ramp allows you do push the box with less force, but you push it over a longer distance.
