The weather is nice. And your kids are\u2026 bored out of their minds. While blog posts about <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/wearethatfamily.com\/2015\/05\/dear-children-let-me-explain-this-thing-called-summer-2\/\">letting kids experiencing boredom<\/a> have gone viral, we know that sometimes they need a little help figuring out what to do. From activities designed to help kids learn and give back to their communities to those focused on making kids a little money and helping them have fun, we\u2019ve gathered the ultimate list of over 100 summer activities for kids. Best of all, most of these activities can be done at home, so you don\u2019t have to spend the summer running your kids from place to place.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #36f;\">Educational Activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">To help prevent kids from experiencing the summer slide, engage them in some educational activities. Last year we shared <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"\/blog\/summer-learning-activities-all-ages.html\">15 summer learning activities for all ages<\/a>. This year, we have a few suggestions to add to that list.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Reading\/Writing<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">1. Create and distribute a family or community newsletter<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">2. Keep a summer journal<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">3. Write and direct a play or puppet show.<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">4. Write letters to family and friends<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">5. Join a summer reading program, such as one found at your local library or <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/u\/summer-reading\/379003570\/\">Barnes and Noble<\/a>.<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">6. Challenge yourself to finish all of the books on a list, such as the American Library Association&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/publications-resources\/book-lists\/2021-summer-reading-list\">Summer Reading List<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Science<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">7. Spend rainy days looking at the resources found on the Help Teaching <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-teaching-science-in-2014-2015.html\">Ultimate Guide to Teaching Science<\/a>.<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">8. Conduct a science experiment<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">9. Find out what plants are in your yard using a field guide or an app like <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.projectnoah.org\/\">Project Noah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Use Help Teaching&#8217;s library of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpteaching.com\/free-science-worksheets.htm\">science worksheets<\/a> to reinforce science concepts and introduce new ideas.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Math<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">10. Take a free summer math course, such as the <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quantiles.com\/content\/summer-math-challenge\/\">Summer Math Challenge<\/a><br style=\"user-select: auto;\">11. Grab a measuring tape or ruler and start measuring random plants outside<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">12. Figure out the perimeter of the local pool<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">13. Count your steps as you walk and try to get in a certain number of steps each day<\/p>\n<p><em>Use Help Teaching&#8217;s library of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpteaching.com\/free-math-worksheets.htm\">math worksheets<\/a> to keep numbers fresh in your child&#8217;s mind.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Other Activities<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">14. Plan a trip by getting out a map and tracking where you want to go. You don\u2019t have to go, just pretend<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">15. Go geocaching<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">16. Go letterboxing<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">17. Take a course or learn a new skill, using some of the resources in Help Teaching&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpteaching.com\/blog\/ultimate-guide-to-free-online-self-learning-for-kids.html\">Ultimate Guide to Free Online Self-Learning for Kids<\/a><br style=\"user-select: auto;\">18. Visit a museum. Many museums offer free days throughout the summer. <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/museums.bankofamerica.com\/\">Bank of America customers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/discounts\/blue-star-museums-military-discount\">military families<\/a> can also get free admission to museums during the summer<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #36f;\">Socially Responsible Activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">Summer is also a great time to teach kids to give back to the community through volunteering, taking care of the environment, and other socially responsible activities. Try out a few of these suggestions this summer.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Volunteering<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">19. Read stories to or play games with residents of a local nursing home<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">20. Spend time visiting the animals at a local animal shelter<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">21. Serve a meal as a family at a local food bank<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">22. Use a service like <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.volunteermatch.org\/\">VolunteerMatch.org<\/a> to find organizations in your area that need volunteers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Helping Others<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">23. Visit with elderly neighbors<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">24. Offer to do chores for neighbors free of charge<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">25. Raise money for a local charity<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">26. Hold a neighborhood food drive<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">27. Donate items to a thrift store or charity<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">28. Clean up trash in your neighborhood or at a local park<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">32. Start recycling cans and bottles at home and encourage neighbors to do the same<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">33. Plant a garden<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">34. Make bird feeders<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">35. Go the farmer\u2019s market. Find a farm using <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pickyourown.org\/\">Pick Your Own<\/a><br style=\"user-select: auto;\">37. Practice conserving water by taking shorter showers and watering plants in the evening<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">38. Start a compost pile<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">39. Raise butterflies<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #36f;\">Money-Making Activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">While most kids aren\u2019t old enough to get an official summer job, they can use the summer to make some extra spending money. Encourage them to earn money to save up for a toy or other item they really want instead of just going out and buying it for them. Some suggestions for making money include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">40. Mow lawns<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">41. Sell lemonade<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">42. Make and sell crafts like bracelets<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">43. Ask parent or neighbors to do chores for pay<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">44. Bake and sell baked goods<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">45. Have a garage sale or toy swap<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">46. Walk dogs<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">47. Sell clothes and toys to a local consignment shop<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #36f;\">Fun Activities<\/h2>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">Of course, at the end of the day, summer is a chance for kids to have fun. There are lots of ways to have fun at home and in your local community.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Cooking and Food<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">50. Make a pitcher of sun tea<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">51. Make ice cream in a bag<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">52. Make sculptures using fruits and vegetables<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">53. Mix whipped cream and food coloring to make edible paint<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">54. Place different flavored fruit juices into paper cups, add a wooden stick, and freeze to make popsicles<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"user-select: auto;\">Arts and Crafts<\/h3>\n<p style=\"user-select: auto;\">55. Paint or draw a picture.<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">56. Practice your photography skills by taking close-up photos of animals and plants<br style=\"user-select: auto;\">57.
