Memorial Day

Instructions: Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. Waterloo, NY was declared the official birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966, but so many towns and cities claim to have been the first to hold a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service it is difficult to know exactly how it began.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed in 1868 by the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first celebrated with the placement of flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. Within twenty years all of the northern states recognized the holiday. The South began to commemorate the holiday after World War I when the holiday was changed to honor those who died fighting in any American war, not just the Civil War.

Answer the following questions about the brave servicemen and women who fought and died in service for our country and the beliefs that we hold dear.
