Geometric Transformations
Geometric Transformations
Introduction: Have you ever been on a Ferris wheel? Imagine climbing in the chair of a Ferris wheel at ground level. The ride starts and you move upwards as the wheel turns. When you reach the top you stop and wait while other riders get on and off. The shape of the Ferris wheel did not change, but you moved. This is a real-world example of a geometric transformation. A geometric transformation is the change in size or movement of a shape.
In geometry, we plot transformations on a coordinate plane. This allows us to describe the changes the figure undergoes. Tracking these changes becomes very important as a shape undergoes multiple transformations. Four types of transformations are illustrated below.
Translation: The figure slides. The figure's size and shape stay the same.

Rotation: The figure turns. The figure's size and shape stay the same.

Reflection: The figure flips. The figure's size and shape stay the same.

Dilation: The figure is re-sized. The figure's size changes. Its shape stays the same.
