Laboratory Safety Symbols

Laboratory Safety Symbols

Hazard Sign - HeatIntroduction: One of the most exciting things about science is hands-on labs. However, practicing science safely is vital to the success of any experiment. You may be asked to sign a safety contract before you are allowed to work with lab equipment or conduct an experiment. This is for your own safety. It is also for the safety of other people working in the lab.
You may see common symbols placed around the lab. They might be located on cabinets, walls, and equipment. Your lab instructions may include these symbols. Laboratory safety symbols are visual reminders of potential hazards. It is important to know the meaning of each symbol so you recognize potential dangers. Understanding the hazards will allow you to take proper safety precautions.
Make sure you understand all safety rules and lab instructions before starting an experiment. Always ask your teacher if you are unsure of what a lab safety symbol means. Immediately report all accidents, injuries, or hazardous conditions to your teacher.
