Topographic Maps

Topographic Maps

You are heading out to climb a mountain. How do you decide which trail to take? A good way to start is by looking at a topographic map. A topographic map shows the surface features for an area of land. These features can be man-made like building, bridges, and roads. But, a topographic map offers more information than just the location of structures. It shows the elevation, change in elevation, and slope of the ground.
So before you climb that mountain, download a digital copy of the topographic map for the area or ask for one at the ranger station. It will show the trails and the elevation changes along each one. Maybe you want to hike a shorter distance over steeper terrain. Maybe you want to enjoy a more leisurely stroll that winds gently around the mountain. Either way, a topographic map will help you find just the right path!
