Finding the Volume of Compound Shapes

Finding the Volume of Compound Shapes

Introduction:
In this lesson you will learn how to calculate the volume of compound shapes. Sometimes shapes are nice and simple like cylinders or boxes but many times they are more complex. When one complex shape is made up of multiple simple shapes we say that it is a compound shape.

In order to calculate the volume of a compound shape you must follow 3 steps:
  1. Visualize the object as distinctly separate elements
  2. Calculate the volume for each element
  3. Combine the volumes of the elements

If you are unsure of how to calculate the volume of simple shapes review the Related Lessons below.
