Field Hockey

Field Hockey

Field hockey is a game played outdoors by two opposing teams .  The players use sticks curved at one end to hit a small, hard ball into their opponent’s goal.  It is like ice hockey but on grass.

It’s believed field hockey was played by ancient people including the Greeks, Persians, and Romans.  It became popular in Great Britain in the mid-1900s.  The sport came to America in the early 20th century.  The game is particularly popular among female athletes.

There are 11 players on a field hockey team including one goalie who protects the team’s goal.  The field is a rectangle.  It is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide with a goal at each end.  The stick is usually 36 to 38 inches long and weighs 12 to 28 ounces.  It’s curved at the end.  Only the flat left side of the stick may be used to hit the ball.  A uniform is made up of shin guards, shoes, shorts, a mouthguard, and a jersey.

The teams play for two 35-minute periods. A goal is worth one point. Whichever team has scored the most goals at the end of the game is the winner.

Field hockey is a fast game.  Maybe you will play it someday.
