Grade 4 Context Clues CCSS: CCRA.R.4, RI.4.4

Did you know that it does not actually snow a lot in the tundra? The ice and snow that you see is called permafrost. It is a layer of frozen soil, which has been covered with all the snow and water that has fallen. In the summer, when temperatures get a little warmer, a lot of the ice and snow melts and forms marshes and lakes. Those lakes and marshes refreeze in the winter as temperatures get colder.

Based on the passage, a tundra is...
  1. A hot, dry area found in the southern part of the globe.
  2. A generally cold Arctic area found around the globe
  3. A type of habitat found only in Antarctica
  4. A habitat where fish and other sea creatures live
