As an ambulance with its siren on approaches you the sound seems to build up, and get louder (increased pitch) and it seems to fade as it drives away (decreased pitch). But we know that the actual siren (volume, pitch, etc.) is not changing, it only appears to. This is an example of the doppler effect .
