Submarines have large tanks which can be filled with a combination of air and water to make the sub rise or sink. This is because the tanks do not change the volume of water displaced by the sub, but can change the mass of the sub. If the sub is heavier than the water it displaces, it sinks, but if it is lighter it will rise. If the two are equal, the sub will stay at the same level.
