Sharks are thought of as one of nature’s most ferocious animals. If people see a shark in the water, they get out quickly. This is because sharks have a bad reputation. People think they will attack anything. In reality, sharks are not as mean as people think. They are just doing what they need to do to survive.

Why do sharks attack so much?

They have a strong sense of smell. Water flows through their nostrils. This helps bring the smells to their brains. If they smell a drop of blood in the water, they know that there is something to eat nearby. Some mother sharks will even eat their baby pups if they don’t escape in time. It’s not just blood that sharks can smell. For example, sharks that feed on tuna can detect tuna oil in the water. Much of a shark's life is about finding food.

If asked to name a shark, what shark would you think of first? Most people think of the Great White Shark. However, there are many smaller sharks. Not all of them are as big or as scary as the Great White Shark. Some sharks, such as the Whale Shark, only eat plankton. That means they don’t need to hunt for food. They simply open their mouths and it flows in. Other sharks, such as the Bonnethead Shark don’t even have sharp teeth. Instead, they have flat, molar-like teeth designed to help them break open the shells of mollusks and other crustaceans.

Even though not all sharks are dangerous, you should still be cautious if you hear there is a shark in the water. Blacktip Sharks, Bull Sharks, Great Hammerhead Sharks, and Tiger Sharks can be just as dangerous as the infamous Great White Shark if they get close to humans, not because they’re out to get humans, but because they’re just looking for something to eat.
