Grade 6 Context Clues

My first flight on a jet was going fine until the very end. The pilot came on the speakers and said, "We will be beginning our descent into New York City shortly. We will be landing in just 20 minutes. There's going to be some turbulence. Please buckle your seat belts. It could be a little rough."
Then, the attendant came down the aisle to see if anyone needed help getting strapped in. She was amiable enough, smiling and kind, but still I was terrified. I closed my eyes and held on tight for the rest of the journey. We were rattled and thrown about so much, I wasn't sure we'd make it!

What is the BEST definition for the word descent in the passage above?
