The hypothesis holds that two sources, known as J and E, each told the ancient history of the people from different perspectives. J looks at the events from the perspective of the southern kingdom; E considers many of the same stories from a northern, Israelite perspective. There is disagreement about which source was written down next. Some believe that it was the source known as D , which was written around the time of King Josiah's reforms, while others believe that it was P , which describes a Tabernacle- or Temple-focused Israelite religion, deeply concerned with issues of purity. The final source, known by the letter R , is identified by some biblical scholars with the Ezra the Scribe.
