Eliza Doolittle is a lowly flower girl when she meets Henry Higgins, a phonetics professor. After hearing of his success teaching others how to speak properly, Eliza offers to pay Higgins to teach her how to teach correctly so that she can work in a flower shop. Eliza, however, does not have enough to pay Higgins, so Colonel Pickering, another phonetics fanatic, offers to pay the difference as a bet. After many lessons and failed social conventions, Higgins and Pickering test Eliza by introducing her at an ambassador's party. Although they are successful in Eliza's assimilation, Eliza is upset with how Higgins' treats her.
