The outer layer of a tree is call the cambium layer. As a tree grows the sapwood growth slows down and becomes heartwood. Heartwood is the inner layer of the tree outside of the pith which is considered the inactive layer of the tree which mean it is no longer growing. What is one benefit of using this portion of the tree for wood working?
