A binary cycle plant uses hot water at a lower temperature than that which supplies steam plants(100-300 deg.F), this technology is generally employed in the following process.
- It flashes most of the liquid to steam, and is separated from the brine. The remaining liquid and condensed steam is injected back into the reservoir.
- It is used directly to drive the turbine, as the steam condenses back to a liquid it is injected back into the reservoir.
- It is passed through a heat exchanger in conjunction with a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point, the secondary fluid vaporizes to drive a turbine. The geothermal fluid is condensed and injected back into the reservoir.
