# Fraction Constructed Response

Print Answer Key (Only the test content will print)

## Fraction Constructed Response Answer Key

Dario is making a birdhouse from a board that is $3/4$ of a meter long. He cuts $1/2$ meter off the board and uses the remaining piece for the base of the birdhouse. Dario subtracts $1/2$ from $3/4$ to find the length of the base. Dario said $3/4 - 1/2 = 2/4$ and plotted $2/4$ on this number line.

$*$ Explain why Dario's answer is not reasonable.
$*$ Find the total length of the birdhouse base, in meters.
$*$ Explain how to use the number line to show your answer is correct.

Enter your answer and explanations in the space provided.
• Student should provide a valid reason why Dario's answer is not reasonable, for example: Since Dario cut $1/2$ meter off of the board that measured less than 1 meter, his final answer should be less than $1/2$, but $2/4 = 1/2$.
Student should correctly calculate the length as $3/4 - 1/2 = 3/4 - 2/4 = 1/4$ meter and explain how to plot on number line, for example: I start at $3/4$ and move to the left 2 $1/4$s to subtract $3/4 - 2/4$ and plot the point at $1/4$.
