The overhead lights dimmed throughout the theatre and the traditional expectant hush filled the huge room as hundreds of patrons stopped their whispering and chatting. With a rustle of fabric, the heavy burgundy curtains separated in the middle and swept gracefully to the sides, just as the first notes from the orchestra wafted across the audience. Cassidy recognized every note in the overture; she had seen some version of this production at least half a dozen times.

Her first play performance was when she was only ten years old, and her Uncle Seth took her to the community theatre. Later, she saw other renditions of the play done professionally, and even once, on Broadway in New York, an experience she would never forget.

The copious songs found in musical plays proved to be love at first note for Cassidy. She listened to soundtracks, read scripts, and practiced lines in front of the mirror in her bedroom. She attended plays at each local high school, held season tickets for the community theatre, and coerced her parents to drive her to the professional theatre an hour away from their city every single summer. It was little secret to anyone that Cassidy's primary ambition in life was to become an actress and find herself on the other side of that silk curtain.
