Imagine a holiday that lasts for an entire month. Now imagine that during that month, you cannot eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. You cannot even have a glass of water! However, once the sun sets each day, you get to enjoy a large meal full of some of your favorite foods. This holiday is known as Ramadan and it's one of the holidays celebrated by Muslim people.

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic Calendar. It is considered a holy month. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims stop to remember the time when their holy book was sent from God to the people. Their holy book is known as the Quran. As sign of honor and respect, everyone twelve years old or older fasts from sunrise to sunset. This means they do not eat or drink as a way of honoring their god.

However, Ramadan is not just about fasting. It is also a time to focus on their faith. During Ramadan, many Muslims also try to avoid other negative traits, such as smoking, gossiping, or being mean to other people. They also practice being generous. During Ramadan, many people raise money for charity and perform other acts of service.

At the end of the month of Ramadan, a three-day celebration is held. It is known as Eid ul-Fitr. Fasting ends and people begin to celebrate. This three-day celebration involves eating a lot of food, going to the mosque to pray, and spending time with family and friends. People often exchange cards and gifts as well. If you meet a Muslim during Eid ul-Fitr, you can say "Eid mubarak!" This means "Have a blessed Ramadan."
