Although the terms “astronomy” and “astrology” are sometimes used as synonyms, their actual meanings are quite different. They share the same root word, “astro”, which means stars. That is about where the similarity ends, however.

Astronomy is the science of studying the earth’s atmosphere and the universe. This field of study includes examining and exploring everything from planets, stars and solar systems to asteroids, galaxies, and black holes. Astronomers research the properties of these celestial objects. They analyze how they relate and impact each other.

On the other hand, astrology is not a study. Instead, it is a belief. Astrologists study the same celestial objects as astronomers, but they do so in the belief that the positions of these stars and planets can directly impact what happens to people on earth. The horoscopes published in newspapers are based on the ideas of astrologists. They often explain how celestial objects affect people, based on their astrological or birth sign.
