To the Extreme

When you think about sports, you may picture an inning of baseball, a round of golf, or a quarter of basketball. You may imagine green fields with goals, stadiums full of yelling fans, or a ball being kicked, thrown, hit, or dribbled in one direction or another.

So, what does a person plunging out of an airplane, climbing a sheer cliff side, or jumping off a bridge with just an over=sized rubber band have to do with sports? They are played by extreme sports fans, also known as adrenaline junkies. These people thrill in pushing their bodies, skills, gear and courage to the breaking point. When they do so, they experience an adrenaline rush, releasing endorphins in the brain, and creating a happy—even euphoric—feeling. It is possible to get addicted to this experience and as time goes on, to escalate the intensity of the sport in order to ramp up the adrenaline.

Extreme sports feature a number of beneficial side effects. The high physical demand typically results in good exercise and quick weight loss. Those that excel at a particular facet of this field can participate in national and even international competitions and end up getting media attention. An "extreme sport athlete" is commonly treated as cool, daring, and even glamorous by their friends and coworkers.

Participating in this type of sports requires courage—and often a significant amount of money. First, there is the training to learn the skill sets and certificates required to participate in the sports, and second, there is the cost of equipment and the travel costs to go where the athletes can perform their sport. Finally, there is the greatest cost of all: life. An adrenaline rush requires an element of danger, and that danger can turn fatal. Without the proper lessons, experience, equipment, and caution, extreme sport athletes can die, paying the highest penalty possible.
