In the Pacific Ocean is a place called the Ring of Fire. This place contains a string of volcanoes. It also has a lot of seismic activity which causes earthquakes.

This ring is actually shaped more like a horseshoe than a ring. It starts at the tip of South America and moves up along the coast of North America. Then it curves across the Bering Strait and goes down through Japan. It ends near New Zealand. Some people also include a stretch of volcanoes in Antarctica to make the ring more like a circle.

Around 75 percent of all volcanoes on Earth are found in the Ring of Fire. There are 452 volcanoes in the ring and many of them are active. Most of the active volcanoes are found near Japan and New Zealand. One of the volcanoes, Mount Ruapehu, which is in New Zealand, erupts every year. Thankfully, most of its eruptions are minor. Another volcano that erupts more regularly is Krakatau in Indonesia. When it does, it doesn’t always cause a lot of damage, but it makes for a very interesting sight.

In the United States, the most famous active volcano in the Ring of Fire is Mount St. Helens. It is located in the state of Washington. If it erupted, it would cause some damage, but not as much as Popocatepetl, a volcano in Mexico. Popocatepetl sits right near the big cities of Mexico City and Puebla. If it erupted, it could completely wipe out those cities.

People who live in the Ring of Fire take extra precautions to make sure they stay safe. Large cities have developed volcano evacuation routes and systems to warn residents if a volcano is coming. Buildings are designed to withstand the earthquakes that occur and people learn how to react in an earthquake to help them stay safe. Scientists are always monitoring the seismic activity around the Ring of Fire too. That way they can tell if an earthquake is coming or a volcano is about to erupt.
