The primary function of nonprofit organizations and philanthropies is to help those in need. In order to do this, they need funding in the form of money. While what they do and whom they serve can range widely - from a school reading program to a charity for homeless teens - the ways in which these organizations are funded is generally the same. Those who are in the business of helping other people rely on the generosity of others in order to survive. To supplement donations given publicly or privately, philanthropies often hire a grant writer to find and write grants from government or private foundation funding.
