When it comes to coins, pennies get most of the attention. Even though they’re worth only one cent, they’re found all over the place. However, there are other types of coins in the United States too. One that often gets overlooked is the dime.

The dime is the smallest of all the coins in the United States. It is around 17mm in diameter and only 1.35mm thick. That means it is also the thinnest of all of the coins in the United States. Instead of having a smooth edge, like the penny, it has a ridged edge. There are 118 ridges, called reeds, around the edge of the dime.

Each dime is worth ten cents or 1/10 of a dollar. This means it takes ten dimes to make a dollar.

What does the dime look like?

On the front it has a picture of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also known as FDR. He is the only four-term president of the United States. FDR was chosen for the dime because he started an organization called the March of Dimes. The dime was first minted in 1946, one year after FDR died. On the front of the dime, FDR’s picture faces to the left. Next to his face on the edge of the dime is the word LIBERTY. By his neck are the words IN GOD WE TRUST. Next to the back of his neck is the date each specific dime was minted.

A different picture is on the back of the dime. The picture features a torch in the middle with an olive branch on the left side and an oak branch on the right side. Across the bottom of the picture is the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM. It means “out of many, one” and is found on all U.S. coins. Curved along the top are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Curved along the bottom are the words ONE DIME.
