Print Test (Only the test content will print)

## Expressions with Parentheses, Brackets, & Braces

Instructions: When evaluating numerical expressions using the order of operations it is important to watch for grouping symbols. There are three common grouping symbols used in order of operations problems: $($ $)$ Parentheses, $[$ $]$ Square Brackets, and ${$ $}$ Braces.

Evaluate expressions with these symbols from the innermost symbol set to the outermost symbol set following order of operations rules. Use what you know about these grouping symbols and order of operations to evaluate the numerical expressions.

1.
Which part of the numerical expression should be evaluated first?
$10 + [(8-2)+(5-3)]$
1. 10 + 8
2. 8 - 2
3. 5 - 3
4. 6 + 2
2.
Which part of the numerical expression should be evaluated first?
$2{4[5+3(8+9)-1]}$
1. 2 x 4
2. 5 + 3
3. 8 + 9
4. 9 - 1
3.
Evaluate the expression.
$5xx[(7-4)+(3xx5)]$
1. 18
2. 30
3. 46
4. 90
4.
Evaluate the expression.
$3 + [2 + (3 xx 1)] - 1$
1. 7
2. 8
3. 9
4. 6
5.
Evaluate.
$[4(14-5)]-:[2(5+1)]$
1. 3
2. 12
3. 36
4. 7
6.
Evaluate.
${[(2+6)xx5]+[(8xx5)-12]}-:4$
1. 15
2. 17
3. 61
4. 68
7.
Kei is evaluating a numerical expression. His work so far is shown.

${84-:[(5xx4)-8]}$
${84-:[20-8]}$

What operation should Kei perform next?
1. Divide 84 by 8.
2. Divide 84 by 20.
3. Subtract 8 from 20.
4. Subtract 8 from 84.
8.
Dawn is evaluating the numerical expression.
$3xx{[(9-3)xx2]+[(7+1)-:4]}$

Her first step is shown.
$3xx{[9-6]+[(7+1)-:4]}$

Is Dawn's first step of her work correct?
1. Yes. Dawn's first step is correct, she should first find 3 x 2.
2. No. Dawn found 3 x 2 first when she should have first found 3 x 9.
3. No. Dawn found 3 x 2 first when she should have first found 9 - 3.
4. No. Dawn found 3 x 2 first when she should have have first found 2 + 7.
9.
Evaluate the numerical expression.

$15-{2+[8 - (12-:4)]}$

10.
Evaluate the numerical expression.

${25-:[5xx(8-7)]}+15$
